Union Hill Unveils Nearly $5 Million Largest Current Kansas City Urban Development of in New In-Fill Homes

KANSAS CITY, MO. (May 8, 2014) – Union Hill, one of Kansas City’s oldest neighborhoods, founded in 1857, is growing, launching the largest home development in the area with the construction of nearly $5 million in new in-fill housing available for ownership. The four home styles are two Cape Cod, six Shirtwaist, three Federal and two Victorian, all designed with the integrity of Union Hill’s existing historic homes. Furnished models of the Cape Cod and Shirtwaist homes will open as part of the Spring Parade of Homes sponsored by the Home Builders Association of Kansas City, April 26 – May 11, open daily from 11 am – 6 pm.

Many of the homes will have a 25-year tax abatement. Existing homes in Union Hill have maintained or exceeded home values in recent years with a solid resale performance. William Rockhill Nelson built the first Cape Cod homes on DeGroff Way for Kansas City Star employees more than 100 years ago. The new Cape Cod homes are next door to the original ones that are occupied by families and long-time residents, complete with front porches on a small walkable street. The Shirtwaist homes are one block west with a brick and wood design complementing the neighboring homes.

Union Hill is building on 150 years of history with a long term vision to continue developing the 16-block neighborhood with solid construction and timeless designs at a high-standard of quality above market expectations. The combined residential and retail district, with more than 1000 residents, offers extensive green space, restaurants and retail for the urban minded that still seek the feeling of a neighborhood, with the convenience of the many nearby downtown and Plaza arts, entertainment and shopping destinations.

Local ownership, development, management and leadership maintain and ensure the success and stability of Union Hill as a neighborhood. The restoration and redevelopment of Union Hill began 30 years ago with Bob Frye’s vision and commitment to the neighborhood. The large development of the Cape Cod, Shirtwaist, Victorian and Federal homes is part of Bob Frye’s overall plan for Union Hill. Residents range from young professionals to active-minded empty nesters, throughout the historic homes, townhomes, condominiums and apartment homes in the Union Hill district.
